Netflix’s “Geeked Week” has brought us looks at many of our favorite nerdy franchises. In particular though, we entered the next chapter or one of our favorite larger-than-life superheroes from Japan. Today, kaiju fans were greeted with Netflix’s trailer for ULTRAMAN RISING, which will debut sometime next year. Showing that this Ultraman is not the classic Hayata story we’re accustomed to, it solidifies itself as a fresh new take on the franchise, as Ultraman begins to expand here in the United States and globally. Ultraman: Rising is directed by Shannon Tindle, known for his animation work on Kubo and the Two Strings, and co-directed by John Aoshima, known for Kubo and directing select episodes of Gravity Falls on DisneyXD. The screenplay is from Tindle and co-writer Marc Haimes, who wrote the aforementioned Kubo.
Synopsis
When baseball superstar Ken Sato returns home to Japan to pick up the mantle of Earth-defending superhero #Ultraman, he quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe. From director Shannon Tindle (Kubo & The Two Strings) & co-director John Aoshima (Kubo & The Two Strings), and based on characters by Eiji Tsuburaya, a creative mind behind #Godzilla, the action-packed animated film ULTRAMAN: RISING hits Netflix in 2024.
The online buzz around this film has been exciting! Both directors have been actively promoting it on Twitter, with Shannon stating “We are immensely proud of this film and this team!”. Other fans looking at the project have added commentary as well, with Gabe Swarr adding [Shannon] “Tindle is an Ultraman FREAK!. With such solid directing talent on board, and some help with visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic, Ultraman: Rising is shaping up to be a perfect entryway for kids to get into our favorite savior from the Land of Light. It perfectly encapsulates the positivity and overall safe outlook that Ultraman has provided for generations, and hopefully, will continue to do for children and families all over the world. We at Kaiju United await the final release of the movie, and are excited to see new kaiju films and shows enter the pop culture stratosphere! This one’s going to be a treat for kids.
