To say that Granate Co. Ltd.’s crowdfunding campaign for the 4K remaster of Mamoru Oshii’s The Red Spectacles on Motion Gallery has been a success would be an understatement. The project has managed to accumulate more than 37,000,000 JPY since its launch of April 29th, 2024, more than tripling its original 10,000,000 JPY goal with the help of over 1,650 backers. But, after a special thank you from director Oshii, comments about overseas interest have been addressed. Needless to say, fans of the Kerberos Saga are in for something truly special.
It was announced on the project’s official Twitter account that not only will international support be open for fans of The Red Spectacles outside of Japan, but that:
-The release will be a 2-disc 4K BD & UHD set
-English subtitles will be added as an option
-Behind-the-scenes bonus features for this remaster will be included
-If the fundraiser reached 35,000,000 JPY before its June 27th deadline, the release will be a steelbook
In addition, 40 more slots for autographed copies by Mamoru Oshii (which have sold out since), plus 50 for composer Kenji Kawai opened on Monday June 3rd 1:00pm JST (for reference, that is 12:00am EST). Plus, 10 slots for Mamoru Oshii autographs opened exclusively for any overseas contributors.
In light of this news, Granate Co. Ltd. was more than generous enough to provide instructions for international fans who wish to support this campaign. Additionally, it was also announced that Yuji Kaida will be producing brand new cover art for this special limited release.
However, because of the tremendous demand for this remaster and the aforementioned plans and additions, shipping for this 4K release has been postponed to December of 2024, as supporters will likely not receive them until January 2025.
