Legendary & Titan Comics Team Up for ‘Return to Skull Island’

Legendary Entertainment’s quest to expand the MonsterVerse continues in the world of comic books. As exclusively revealed by Variety, Return to Skull Island is the latest in the frequent and expansive world of MonsterVerse comics. Just like any other franchise, the supplemental expanded universe of tie-in media is giving opportunity for stories to continue, monsters to be highlighted, and of course, for kaiju fans to get more kaiju action. Set in the same world as the Netflix Skull Island animated series, the book takes place within the same year as a team returns to Kong’s home.

The book is written by Simon Furman, who non-kaiju nerds may recognize as the man to write Transformers comic books, having involvement in the franchise since the 1980’s Marvel run. Additionally, Christopher Jones (Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord) will provide art for the book. The front cover of the book is illustrated by Inhyuk Lee. In the story, “a group of survivors are stranded on the perilous South Pacific island. As they uncover its dark secrets, they face life-threatening challenges and fight for survival in a land where every creature is a threat — including King Kong himself.”

Louis Yamani, Editor over at Titan Comics, expressed excitement upon answering some great mysteries left behind in the wake of the island’s destruction in 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong. “Skull Island’s shadows hide untold stories, fierce battles, and creatures unlike anything seen before,” he said. “Marrying brilliant illustrations and epic storytelling, we see a new side to Kong and his kingdom. We can’t wait to share more this June.”

Senior Vice President and Publisher at Legendary Comics, Robert Napton, commented on the opportunity to team up with Titan Comics. “Partnering with Titan Comics on Return to Skull Island allows us to expand the MonsterVerse in exciting new ways,” he stated. “Bringing Skull Island from TV to comics lets us dive deeper into its mysteries, offering fans thrilling new adventures in Kong’s world.”

Fans can pick up Return to Skull Island beginning June 4th, 2025. As a companion marketing piece, Legendary has also revealed where this new book (and its animated predecessor) end up on the grand timeline of the MonsterVerse, indicating that this book will have greater ramifications than other past comic tie-in media.
