Oh boy, this one is crazy! After all the setup of the first issue, we get right into the action from the start of this one! Some classic Toho monsters make a cameo appearance in the opening scene, really showcasing that this is a world of monsters. We get some more world building as the story progresses and there are some crazy twists! Not really a spoiler if you look at variant covers, but Megaguirus has a significant role to play, and I can honestly say I’ve always wanted a Mothra Vs. Megaguirus storyline!
The writing is significantly better than issue one, feeling a little more natural and less like plot heavy exposition. The turmoil these two girls go through on their short journey to find a Mothra egg is really compelling and handled with so much weight you’ll forget it was only half the issue. We also get a more twisted than usual look at the Shobijin and I am so curious to see where their plot goes! The two twins (and us the audience) need some answers for the aftermath of this issue!
Once again the art is phenomenal as well, Megaguirus looks just like the prop from her own movie! Mothra sports a design closer to her 1961 appearance than her cover appearances, but her new larva is an adorable little yellow cutie. Antra’s second appearance also offers a clearer view of her and her minions and she looks like she came straight out of a Tokusatsu movie! Big bug Kaiju never looked so good!
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters issue two is exactly what I hoped it would be! Everything issue one sets up is finally getting started and we are learning Mothra related secrets. I love the lore and world of this comic already and issue two got to run because issue one walked. If you were a little skeptical after the exposition heavy first issue, don’t worry, this one has plenty of action! It’s got a 9/10 from me for being an interesting and really fun piece of Kaiju media!
