Review: ‘Godzilla vs. X-Men’ Explores Common Ground of Mutants and Monsters

In the fourth issue of the Godzilla vs. Marvel series, the X-Men run into one of their most colossal tasks yet: putting a stop to Godzilla’s destruction in Japan. Acclaimed X-Men writer Fabian Niceza delivers an engaging story that captures the essences of both the mutant and kaiju worlds, building further on the great work accomplished throughout this astounding Marvel-Toho crossover.

Even with tons of training, the X-Men need to size up to stand any chance against the King of the Monsters, and size up they do for an epic-scale battle depicted excellently by artist Emilio Laiso. His work is complemented well by Federico Blee’s vibrant and eye-catching 90s-style coloring. The story is well paced, provides good context for those unfamiliar with the X-Men, and stages its twists and turns at just the right times.

Kaiju fans in particular will be delighted with a unique creation introduced in the latter half of the story. Its design and concept will no doubt grip attention, and it is cleverly used as a plot device and allegory for narrative purposes. Arguably the issue’s greatest strength, however, is its profound writing and interesting
connection that it creates between Godzilla and the X-Men.

Up to this point in the crossover, the stories have done well in crossing over worlds, paying homage, and delivering spectacle, but perhaps lacked that advanced sense of substance. ‘Godzilla vs. X-Men’ takes great interest in a thematical similarity between the two entities: both are well acquainted with the loneliness of being feared and hated by others, sometimes by those they seek to protect. This level of writing at this point in the crossover is certainly appreciated.

‘Godzilla vs. X-Men’ continues this historic crossover’s exciting momentum. It is a poignant entry to the series that delivers both substance and spectacle.
