Mothra: Queen of the Monsters has been a genuine treat so far and this issue is no different! Our new Mothra larva is being trained for a fight against Megaguirus, who has turned out to be the real villain of this series, and honestly, I love that. I can’t go any further into the plot because I think it’s better as a surprise because this issue goes to some crazy places!
More Toho Kaiju make their appearances, which is a pleasant surprise and we get a really cool concept Kaiju too! The art makes all these Kaiju look like genuine Tokusatsu props and they’re just so fun to see! Mothra carrying a solo book with other Godzilla themed bad guys is just great! My favorite thing about this book is the way every time period the protagonists travel to is colored differently to give the audience a different tone and atmosphere!

The writing is also particularly strong in this issue and we get some good character growth and character bonding! I love the way the girls are developed and their dialogue feels pretty organic! Most of all though, we get some answers from the Shobijin about everything going on! This issue doesn’t have a lot of action, but it does explain the situation that has escalated to some pretty crazy places. The Shobijin explain some more lore that is really interesting, and we get to see some more time periods as was mentioned earlier!
Overall, I don’t think this issue is as impressive as the last issue. This is mainly because the action in issue 2 is a lot more prominent and there aren’t any lore exposition dumps. However, this issue showcases some highlights that are a higher peak than issue 2, packing some insanely awesome fan service within. Plus, it has a really good design for a new form of Mothra! It’s a really fun addition to the IDW line of Godzilla comics, with strong characterization and good action balanced with spectacular fanservice! I love seeing other Toho Kaiju show up, but this comic gives Mothra the respect she deserves. It gets an 8/10 and I can’t wait for the next issue!!!
