Godzilla’s current comic world momentum revolves around battling against Marvel’s greatest heroes, entire cities in the IDW crossover, and more to come on both of those fronts. DC’s sequel series announced at NYCC 2024, Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2, has released its first issue to join in the frenzy, meaning three different publishers are putting out Godzilla stories all at the same time. An amazing time for readers, and an interesting time for understanding the different approaches to Big G in each of these publisher’s incarnations.
The story starts with Amanda Waller summoning the Suicide Squad in hopes of dealing with Godzilla more efficiently in his next appearance. A test is run, and one “Titanization” later, King Shark dukes it out with Godzilla in a towering introduction. Illustrator Christian Duce does an excellent job of portraying scale and giving proper entrances to the stars of the show: Godzilla and Kong.

Meanwhile, the Justice League ventures to Skull Island to look for Lex Luthor, resulting in their own titanic encounter with Kong. All the while an intriguing subplot of Flash is brewing. Barry Allen has just gotten married but is yet to reveal his secret identity to his spouse. People around him have different views on the matter. Some say reveal it because it is important, while Bruce Wayne (no surprise here) brings up the point that revealing identity as a superhero is a big risk for both people involved. It is one of the more prevalent human plot points that will undoubtedly lead to some juicy drama later on.
Understandably for a first issue, there is a fair amount of exposition and plot setup, but the monster action, while so far scarce, is looking good. Returning writer Brian Buccellato does a solid job at introducing different plot points of multiple characters in an accessible way. There is a good amount of ambiguity that leaves readers curious about what happens next. The mood is (expectedly) very much DC and Legendary, a contrast from the current Godzilla Marvel run that readers may feel. This is a great thing, the more manners in which one can read Godzilla, the better!
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #1 is off to a solid start in creating hype for another DC and Titan clash. Fans will enjoy the well-established tones and engaging plot points, and it promises to be a great addition to the Godzilla Comic pantheon.
