Review: ‘Godzilla vs. Thor’ is the BEST of the Marvel Crossovers

Godzilla and Thor both have been huge parts of my entire life. As a kid, I remember reading any Thor-related property I could, ranging from the actual Norse myths to the Marvel comics, and of course I would endlessly watch and rewatch the entire Godzilla franchise as well. This felt like a long time coming for me, despite the fact I never thought it would. Does Godzilla vs. Thor live up to the hype, though? Let’s find out!

This comic is massive. This is the biggest, most intense and powerful battle I’ve ever seen in a comic – it even dwarfs the iconic battle between Thor and Jormungandr (the World Serpent) written and drawn by Walt Simonson, featured in Thor #380. Thor gets to show how much of a powerhouse he is and truly demonstrates why he is the mightiest god of them all. The writing feels mythological and grand, like reading an ancient tale of immortal god vs immortal monster. Thor feels like a legendary hero, and the stakes feel absolutely dire. The world will end without Thor defeating the King of the Monsters.

Something fun too is this comic uses the Godzilla from “Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack” and it even references the film, which kind of implies this isn’t in the same universe as the previous “Godzilla vs Marvel” titles. I do think the comic relies on its readers knowing some Marvel lore, which may be confusing to new readers. The Hand (most notable for being Daredevil villains) is involved in resurrecting Godzilla, with the book even referencing their run-in with The Punisher. Jason Aaron also puts some callbacks to his own iconic run on Thor as well. I think the book could be a little hard for non-Marvel fans to fully grasp, but I think the ride is worth it regardless.

The ending is incredibly powerful and feels like a fitting end to a series where Godzilla challenges the Marvel Universe! I love this comic as a fan of Marvel’s Thor as well as Godzilla, and I think anyone that likes power scaling is going to have so much fun seeing Godzilla at the highest peak he’s ever been. This might be Godzilla’s biggest story ever put to paper or screen and I think fans of the character will love it for that, as well as find a new appreciation for the mighty Thor: God of Thunder.
