‘Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe’ #1 Review: Marvel’s Heroes are Presented with a Challenge Never Seen Before

As one crossover saga concludes, another begins. The long-anticipated Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe is here, and similar to the series of one-shots Godzilla vs. Marvel that has just concluded, this newest kaiju-marvel crossover brings tons of excitement and spectacle. And now, officially, both Marvel and DC have Godzilla taking on their respective universes at the same time, marking a fascinating time for the Kaiju comic world. 

Mole Man, in a usual effort to obtain power, attempts to utilize Vibranium to create a weapon, but disrupts natural order and awakens Godzilla and a Celestial Being. The Fantastic Four gets the blunt of mayhem in Manhattan, as an extremely powerful Godzilla deals with the Celestial Being with ease. From there, it’s nonstop action and old-school kaiju spectacle that leaves a massive mark on every page. 

As has been the usual with Marvel’s recent line of Godzilla stories, the art and scale are depicted excellently by artist Javier Garrón. Godzilla is massive, and sound effects are so large and prominent that the decibels practically come off of the page. Godzilla’s design is also a solid choice. A tall and lean, serious look that is fittingly similar to his Final Wars suit. 

And just like Final Wars, Godzilla is extremely threatening and powerful. His threat is felt by both the audience and Marvel’s heroes themselves immediately, as he literally sends Thor into the stratosphere. Big G’s eyes noticeably flash “with anger and pain,” a commonly done character trait that will likely be explored in this crossover down the line. 

On the Marvel side, the tone mixes well with the high stakes set by Godzilla, as writer Gerry Dugan blends the two together. It is a bit more serious than the series of one-shots but still has the usual clever Marvel quips and charm. Plenty of Marvel characters are involved or make appearances, even slightly minor ones, which makes everything feel gleefully expansive. 

‘Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1’ shows promising signs of being an excellent crossover series to rival DC’s Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2.
