IDW Publishing’s epic anthology comic, Godzilla: 70th Anniversary, has taken home the prestigious Eisner Award for Best Anthology during this year’s ceremony at San Diego Comic-Con. For those who don’t know, these awards are to recognize the best and brightest in the comics industry, and essentially function as their own “Academy Awards.” This is the first time in the King of the Monsters’ history that the franchise has taken home an Eisner, after being previously nominated for Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons. Frank Tieri’s pirate-themed take on Godzilla secured noms for Best Limited Series and Best Penciller/Inker, but ultimately did not take home the award.
This anthology comic was a massive collaboration, featuring talented Godzilla veterans like James Stokoe, Matt Frank, and EJ Su. Matt Frank’s addition to the anthology, In the Shadow of a God, featured poetry by frequent Kaiju United guest & friend, Donny Winter, as well as beautiful calligraphy by Maki Takarada.
We’d like to extend a massive congratulations to everyone involved in this comic, from the talented writers, artists, inkers, and colorists who worked on the book to the teams at IDW Publishing and Toho International, for this historical and incredible win for the beloved Japanese franchise.
