This is it, the best issue so far! Mothra Queen of the Monsters Issue 4 sets the stage for the big finale next month, but in the most fun and fan service way it possibly could! This issue picks up mere seconds after Issue 3 with the summoning of Antra to spar with Mothra to train for the big fight against Megaguirus! The story quickly transitions to Mothra’s training montage, and it’s so much better than I could have hoped for. Mothra travels the globe and fights more than just Antra to train, and seeing these Kaiju redesigned by Matt Frank is such a pleasure! They’re all identifiable even without their names being said, and there are some wonderful deep cuts into the Toho catalog of Kaiju!
The writing is pretty standard, dialogue is typical training encouragement, but that’s not a bad thing. We do, however, get a good scene at the end of our protagonists wondering what happens after the battle with Megaguirus, pondering their purpose after this great battle. The ending also builds up how much Megaguirus has strengthened over the years she has been in our time period, and has become a deity in her own right. The final battle of the next issue has a lot to live up to though. I’m not sure the fan service of this issue can be topped though! If you like Kaiju as a concept and if you really like deep cut Toho Kaiju, this issue is for you. It’s an entire “MOTHRA VS” random Kaiju you never thought would appear in this comic story and that’s wonderful.

Overall, Mothra Issue 4 delivers more fun than any other Toho related Kaiju comic I’ve read! The writing is solid, even if it’s not groundbreaking, and the art is wonderful and shows a lot of love for Toho’s most overlooked Kaiju. The pacing perfectly allows this comic to fly by! I feel like I was able to read this issue super fast, and honestly that keeps it fun and fresh all the way through! This is worth a read and I cannot wait for issue 5!
