The second issue of a crossover that has plenty of buzz around it, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #2 is here and it is not only a ton of fun but also seems to be on the path of a more ambitious story than originally expected. That is, it is being true to the name, universes are becoming involved.
The story fast forwards to 2099, with an angry Human Torch taking on Godzilla as vengeance for taking away his family (recall that in the previous issue Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and The Thing, along with Captain America, were sent through a portal to the Negative Zone after failing to use it on Godzilla). Seeing the future in a story like this is an interesting and ambitious storytelling angle and provides a level of ambiguity and interest to look forward to.
Back in the present, Marvel’s heroes are still struggling with a Godzilla that gets more absurdly strong in every new page. Big G even manages to turn other villains against him as he destroys the villain pub, The Bar with No Name, and Rhino, Vulture, and more begin their assault on him, while Venom’s symbiote nearly attaches to Godzilla before Spider-Man intervenes (fortunate for them, but unfortunate for the audience to get symbiote Godzilla taken from us!).

Marvel’s biggest trump card in this fight, Dr. Strange, gets involved, but even his powers are fruitless. Thor comes in riding Fin-Fang Foom (A Jack Kirby Kaiju Cameo!), who also gets dealt with. Finally, the remaining heroes and Doctor Strange manage to send Godzilla to the astral plane, simply postponing the problem but at least giving themselves time to plan. The issue ends with another intriguing cliff-hanger, which we won’t spoil.
The story so far is very fun, filled with tons of action and great art, and a fair share of comedic quips. What perhaps is becoming more noticeable is the sheer (and some say unexplained) strength of Godzilla that has completely dominated the entire plot. While G might feel overpowered, it is within reason. There have been overwhelmingly strong Godzillas in stories before, it simply makes things all the more interesting for Marvel’s heroes to concoct a way to defeat him. And of course, the looming 2099 plotline should play an intriguing role in the story later. Garron’s art is as stunning as usual, maintaining a great sense of scale.
