Review: ‘Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong’ II #3 Stutters Slightly, Ends on Exciting Cliffhanger

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs Kong 2 #3 is here, and while the series has continued its trend of slowing down with heavy dialogue scenes and less action, an imminent plot explosion can be felt. Particularly, a salivating teaser at the end of the issue. Spoilers ahead!

Oddly, the issue begins with Harley Quinn having a therapy session with Harleen Quinzel, the MonsterVerse Earth version of her. Some may be confused at the inclusion of this conversation, as the topic is Harley’s complicated relationship with Joker, and not anything apparent that is relevant to the plot. However, it would be good to assume that this conversation is not placed for no reason at all, so perhaps Harley and her role in the story will be explored more later on.

Meanwhile, Superman and Lex put their differences aside for an epic team up against Kong and his band of apes, until Lex, in Lex fashion, ditches Superman. Elsewhere, a concussed Flash and Batman realize Lex’s plan to “titanize” his comrades, something that Batman wants to alert other heroes back home about and gain reinforcements. The best option to do that is Flash going back to Batman’s mecha to retrieve key components to activate Batman’s portal, but it is a risky mission, especially for a newlywed as Batman emphasizes (there’s that plot point coming up again!). The mission needs to hurry up fast, as Lex and Colonel Shaw link up to begin figuring out how to extract life force energy to execute their plan.

Flash’s mission gets interrupted by Cheetah, who promptly gets interrupted by Kong. Fellow heroes back home grow wary at the lack of communication, so Green Lantern opens up the portal, to get greeted by none other than Kong. Wonder Woman and Supergirl cleverly fool their captors and team up for some good action, finding Monarch’s ship’s computer base. They get into contact with Batman who reveals that Lex’s plan is in full swing and that titans, including Godzilla, are coming. A tired Superman pushes himself to look for Lex but finds none other than the King of the Monsters ready for his rematch.

While action is rather sparse again in this issue, there is a lot going on at once and many interesting plot points to keep up with. The tension is still very high, and the plot feels like it is on ice about to break. With other characters getting involved, things will certainly get dicier. It feels like Lex and his comrades have the upper hand with the Justice League separated from each other and the Flash and Superman in weaker states. And of course, the highlight of the issue is that it teases the epic rematch between Supernan and Godzilla that everyone has been waiting for.

Overall, Justice League vs. Godzilla vs Kong 2 #3 is in the slightest ways a step down from previous two issues, but action and stakes should be ramping up as soon as the next issue, leaving everyone eager to read the next chapter in one of the biggest Godzilla comic crossover series of the year.
