The original friend of Gamera has joined the Island of Fire.
Yoshiro Uchida, who portrayed the iconic Toshio Sakurai in Gamera, the Giant Monster, is returning to giant monster cinema! Uchida-san has been cast in the upcoming independent kaiju film Kaiju: Island of Fire, which is now in production and picking up a few extra additions to its cast along the way. Not many details are known about his exact role, as character details are being kept under wraps, but he will be joining fellow Gamera child star Carl Craig (Gamera vs. Viras) in the film. Additionally, Showa era legends Linda Miller (King Kong Escapes) and Tomoko Ai (Terror of Mechagodzilla) have been cast in the film in undisclosed roles.

After starring in the original 1965 Gamera film, Uchida-san had a few roles in television before transitioning into a singer, releasing 2 albums titled Poetry of Youth and Hometown, as well as five single LP releases. He other credits include the 2018 independent film The Great Buddha Arrival, where he was cast alongside fellow kaiju alumni Akira Kubo, Bin Furuya, and the late Akira Takarada, as well as 2020’s Nezura 1964.

Kaiju: Island of Fire is the first installment in a planned giant monster franchise. In the film, “a combined military task force travels to an ancient Japanese Island, searching for the missing members of a construction team, currently in the process of building a new military base. Once there, they find a foreboding, fiery landscape that hides a terrifying threat, capable of destroying them…and all who venture near.”
The indie production is directed by Andrew L. Phillips (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), while Avery Guerra and James H. Christy serve as producers. Nicholas Hatfield (Shin Godzilla, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) has also joined the production as a Scenic Artist, having previous experience serving under the art department in several Hollywood productions.

Three actors from 1991’s Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah will also be in the film: Robert Scott Field, Chuck Wilson, and Kent Gilbert, making this an all-star lineup of kaiju veterans. The film is now in production in Japan and is set for release sometime in 2026.
