‘Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe’ #5 Review

On November 19th, the full-feature Marvel x Godzilla crossover miniseries concluded. After Godzilla’s absence from Marvel since 1979, fans of the two iconic properties have been treated to some wonderful comics crossing the two worlds together. From the series of one-shots to this blockbuster mini-series, there has been some really interesting, fun, and quality comics being put out! Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe may have reached its conclusion, but Godzilla is quite far from being dealt with for Marvel’s heroes.

*Spoilers Ahead!*

The Black Panther mecha does its job, and manages to stop the seemingly unstoppable Godzilla. Cap, Mole Man, and the rest of the absent Fantastic Four finally return to Johnny’s delight. A giant sized problem needs a giant sized solution, and it is decided that Big G is to be exiled on a foreign planet with no inhabitants and be alone, forever. Marvel’s heroes certainly were not harboring any hard feelings over sending G away and said, “It’s what the monster deserves.”

But of course, as many have realized since the Infinity Roar announcement, this saga is far from over. Knull, of all people, will be teaming up with Godzilla in space to wreck absolute havoc. The epilogue is so absolutely well executed. When reading this comic, one may be waiting for the real “conclusive page” that wraps everything together. It never quite comes; this saga never quite feels like it’s over. That’s because it most certainly is not, and Knull and Godzilla will be an utterly cataclysmic duo that I can not wait to see on comic pages come February. 

The conclusion of this comic does well to stay consistent with the style and tone that has been present throughout. It’s not a complex interpretation of Godzilla and there are not super nuanced dynamics between characters and Godzilla. G was simply a plot device antagonist for Marvel’s heroes to deal with. For some, maybe that was a dissapointment, but I believe the story places plenty of tidbits that hint at the ambigious, grey nature of this Godzilla. Considering that there will be a sequel, Godzilla’s character and role will perhaps be expanded on, which is something readers should definitely look for.

While this series has perhaps had some ‘controversies,’ it has delivered on being a fun, spectacle crossover with a lot of cool ideas and moments. Marvel and Godzilla’s continued collaboration should be celebrated, and it makes me really happy that the two properties will continue to be working together through Infinity Roar, and hopefully even more series to come!
