One of the most intriguing Godzilla Store exclusives featured this year on Godzilla Day was the debut of the “FIVE LEGACIES” collectible from IGLOO Studio. The Thailand-based company, who specialize in animation AND 3D collectibles, unleashed the epic statue that boasts five iconic Godzilla designs upon the United States in a full color version and a bronze finish, with the full color being indefinitely sold out as of writing this intro. The studio is also responsible for the 70 Years of Godzilla: A New Roar in Southeast Asia 3D animated short that features Godzilla with green atomic breath, and is one of the key studios spearheading the new Godzilla anime series that will see worldwide distribution.
With so much going on, Kaiju United had to get to the bottom of IGLOO Studio’s new foray into officially licensed Godzilla collectibles and animation, starting with their “FIVE LEGACIES” piece. Through email correspondence, we inquired about how the statue came to be, what the collectibles scene in Thailand is like, and more! Plus, IGLOO shared a behind-the-scenes look at their collectible, giving fans an extra look into how the epic piece came to be.
Kaiju United: How did this statue originate? Where did the idea to combine five Godzillas come from?
IGLOO Studio: Since partnering with Toho in 2023, we have explored opportunities to work together on Toho’s IPs, including Godzilla. A year later, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of this legendary icon by creating the fan art below that unites five iconic Godzillas.
IGLOO: The response from fans was phenomenal, inspiring us to take the concept to the next level and transform it into this official collectible.
Bringing five Godzillas together in a single art piece was an exciting creative challenge and complicated, but we were fortunate to receive approval. As a result, this statue marks the first time in history that all five Godzillas appear together in one collectible.
KU: What is the merchandise/collectibles scene in Thailand like? Is this the first major officially licensed Godzilla item from there?
IGLOO: Thailand has other players in the collectibles scene, including those working with officially licensed Godzilla.
In recent years, the collectibles market here has grown tremendously, driven by POP MART and the success of Labubu. Even so, we believe we can compete in this market, as we are a team of ambitious people dedicated to delivering high-quality creativity and storytelling through our works.
KU: Can fans expect more Godzilla collectibles from IGLOO in the future?
IGLOO: Absolutely! Many more are coming, and not just collectibles.
KU: The FIVE LEGACIES collectible made it to the United States Official Godzilla Store as part of the “Godzilla Day” lineup of exclusive merch. What was that international recognition like?
IGLOO: Being featured in the Official Godzilla Store in the U.S. was incredibly exciting. It validated our work on an international scale and showed that fans around the world appreciate the creativity and passion we put into our designs. For a studio from Thailand, it was a proud moment to see our collectible alongside other official Godzilla merchandises.
KU: Why were the specific five Godzillas chosen for the piece?
IGLOO: We would like to tell the milestone 70-year journey of Godzilla by highlighting an iconic Godzilla from each Japanese era (Showa, Heisei, Millenium, and Reiwa).
So, we selected Godzilla 1954 (Showa) as it is the very first Godzilla; Godzilla 1995 to represent the Heisei era, marking the end of one era and the beginning of another; Godzilla 2001 (Millenium) for reinvigorating the franchise for a new generation; Godzilla 2016 (Reiwa) as the unstoppable version that captured the hearts of an entirely new audience; and finally, Godzilla 2023 (Reiwa), which confirms that Godzilla has truly made a complete return.
KU: Many collectibles in Japan have a main sculptor for their pieces such as Yuji Sakai or Masami Yamada. Was there an individual that sculpted this piece or was it more of a team sculpt?
IGLOO: Five Legacies is our in-house artist team that designed and sculpted this piece. Since this is our debut collectible, it was created through a team effort rather than by a single sculptor.
