‘Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong II’ Issue 5 Review: All-Out Brawl

It’s been quite a while since issue 4 of this blockbuster miniseries hit the shelves, and considering the cliffhanger, it was an angsty wait. But, the newest installment in the series made the wait well worth it. We bore witness to an all out monster brawl featuring Rodan, King Ghidorah, Godzilla, Kong, juiced up Superman, Ultima-Lantern, and others. Plus, Harley gets herself involved fittingly by pestering Batman about Joker. Let’s get into it!

The plot evolves and our heroes scrap, scrap, and scrap. Meanwhile, news of Amanda Waller’s death and who is actually running the show is getting around. It does feel like a great 3^rd to last issue, the plot is yet to reach its climax, but stakes are already so high. This is also perhaps Christian Duce’s best art performance yet. The visuals are utterly stunning, every fight looks great, and every monster design is super solid. There are definitely some phone wallpaper-worthy panels in here! It is quite fitting that Ghidorah is a menacing villain for the Justice League just as he always has been for Godzilla.

There has been a great balance between the strength of D.C. heroes and the strength of the kaiju. Each side’s abilities are well-respected for sure. Certainly something that would pan out well in an adaptation… which there have lately been calls for. Whether an animated series, or a television one, either this comic or its predecessor would absolutely slam.

The issue ends with a dreading cliffhanger. “Even with Godzilla and Kong on our side… we still lost. Now we don’t even have them. Making sure Kong is all right makes sense. But bottom line… we need a better plan.” Brutally cold. Readers of this mini-series so far will definitely enjoy this. Tons of great action and ambiguity that leaves one very interested as to where this can go. There are a multitude of directions that things can go, and of course, the more the merrier!
