Kaiju fans with a keen eye may have seen some teasers this week urging MonsterVerse fans to “look up.” That’s because last night, Apple TV celebrated the debut of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ second season with an epic, kaiju-sized drone show above the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Godzilla, Kong, and Titan X were all featured, with over 3,000 drones participating in the spectacle. This massive display ultimately gave Apple TV the Guinness World Record for tallest aerial display of a fictional character formed by drones. This event activation arrived right on the heels of the star-studded World Premiere of the show’s second season on February 19th at the TCL Chinese Theatre.
The display, which was developed by creative agency Heads in the Sky, was twelve minutes long and accompanied by a score developed by the show’s composer, Leopold Ross. This show has some other interesting feats accompanying it: The drones flew nearly 500 feet in the sky, which is taller than the Statue of Liberty and most standard high-rise buildings. Additionally, the square footage was 1000 x 1000 (the size of three football fields), and was visible for monster movie enthusiasts within a three mile radius.
The drone show also integrated pyrodrones in the air and on the ground acting as visual effects for key moments, such as Godzilla blowing his destructive trademark atomic breath. Apple TV also added a comment about the immersion within the Los Angeles skyline, stating that the show “plays with the Hollywood landscape to situate Godzilla, Kong, and the newly introduced Titan X amidst the landscape to feel like they’ve truly taken over the city.”
Series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anders Holm, Mari Yamamoto and Joe Tippett were also in person at the scene to witness the viral display, which has been shared all over social media as kaiju fans were treated with one of the most unique marketing campaigns in recent memory, at least in terms of Godzilla history. Check out some video and photos capturing the epic event below, courtesy of Apple TV, and stay tuned for more updates on the new season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters which premieres globally this Friday on February 27th on Apple TV. The season premiere will launch that day, with subsequent episodes premiering every Friday until May 1st.
