Move over Christopher Nolan, there’s a new take on The Odyssey coming this summer! Today, IDW and Toho International announced a new iteration of the continuing Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre series, in which Godzilla will go on a mythical quest in a kaiju-sized twist on Homer’s classical epic. The book is written by Frank Tieri, who is no stranger to the King of the Monsters, having scribed works such as Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons and its sequel miniseries Here There Be Aliens. On the art front, Greek artist Ilias Kyriazis brings the story to life after previously working with IDW Publishing on titles such as Ghostbusters. Additionally, original Monsterpiece Theatre scribe Tom Scioli returns with the second installment of his backup story Godzilla Vs. Robin Hood in which the King of the Monsters meets the Prince of Thieves in a fun, riveting swashbuckler tale.
In a statement provided to Godzilla.com, writer Frank Tieri remarked upon fitting Godzilla into the narrative world behind one of history’s greatest stories:
“The Odyssey is hands down one of the greatest stories ever told in history. I mean, it has everything… the Trojan War, vicious sea monsters, angry gods, enchanting sirens, devious witches, a cyclops with vision problems, etc. But there is one thing clearly missing… and that’s Godzilla. After all, Godzilla makes every story better, even this one, am I right?
In addition to the King of the Monsters, expect to see more kaiju than you can shake a Trojan horse at (or a Trojan Godzilla at, in this case). Part of the fun of this book was jamming as many familiar faces from the Godzilla-verse in there, so plan on seeing Rodan, Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and plenty of others you won’t see coming.
Toss out everything you know about Greek history and come join us on our GODyssey, if you will. Trust me… you won’t be sorry. (Though Odysseus might be, granted.)”
Below is a gallery of all four variant covers, plus a preview of five pages of the book initially posted by Godzilla.com. Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey will hit comic shops on June 10th, with pre-orders now available until May 4th. Contact your local comic shop to put in an order! The next entry in the Monsterpiece Theatre lineup, Romeo and Juliet and Godzilla, will hit comic stores next month on April 8th.
