Toho Announces 5 Kaiju 4K Releases in Japan

Last night, Toho Co., Ltd. made a major announcement through its Toho Visual account on X: Five Kaiju films are officially receiving new physical releases, restored in 4K! Released on both 4K UHD and Blu-Ray formats. All are currently available for pre-order in the Online Godzilla Store for Japan and Amazon Japan.

Please note that these physical releases are exclusive to Japan and do not include English subtitles. But fans are encouraged to support these releases, so maybe Toho could bring them over here!

Following the studio’s previous Godzilla 70th Anniversary 4K UHD set, this lineup marks a brand new wave of 4K releases for the Tokusatsu genre. Now, while these titles are new to disc, their restorations were completed over the past several years, the oldest one being Mothra in 2021, continuing with Rodan in 2022, The Mysterians in 2023, and reportedly both Gorath and Atragon in 2024. To even add onto that, Frankenstein vs. Baragon and Matango were also restored in 4K. With a select few airing on TV and the others through a limited theatrical run at Toho Cinemas.

Below is the complete list of the 5 Kaiju Flicks slated for release during the summer. Read on for a deep dive into the specifications, audio tracks, and bonus content that are currently known!

This is incredible news as the announcement comes at a milestone for Toho, where the studio recently completed the 4K restorations for all 30 Japanese-Produced Godzilla films, which are now being screened in theaters across Japan.

Each film has its own proper standalone release, with the Godzilla Store Online offering exclusive editions, each including a reproduction poster tied to its respective film.

For fans of Tokusatsu, this marks a significant effort in preserving this genre in the highest quality possible. This wave of releases could offer what may be the definitive home video experience for some of Toho’s iconic Kaiju, and hopefully, signal a future for global releases.
