‘Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster’ To Screen in the UK This Summer

King Ghidorah has remained one of the most iconic Godzilla foes for over 60 years. Since his debut in 1964, he has made a name for himself as a fan favorite among Kaiju fanatics. Surely, there is no doubt that King Ghidorah truly deserves the title of “king.”
For fans in the United Kingdom interested in his journey to the top, however, look no further than the Barbican Sculpture Court!

On August 23, 2026, at 8:30 PM, the Barbican Centre Outdoor Cinema will be hosting a screening of Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. This iconic Ishirō Honda film marks the first appearance of the foreboding and beloved golden dragon, King Ghidorah. The film follows everyone’s favorite King of the Monsters, Godzilla, fighting alongside Mothra and Rodan in order to reclaim his title as king and protect the lives of humans from the titular Kaiju. This film has remained a fan-favorite for many years, and for good reason! It is exactly the kind of tokusatsu action that fans of the genre want to see. With its historical precedence with introducing such an icon as well, it’s surely something that cannot be missed!

The Barbican website eloquently summarizes the film:

One of the best Godzilla films brings back the dream team of director Ishirō Honda, special effects maestro Eiji Tsuburaya, composer Akira Ifukube and some of Toho’s most beloved monsters – Mothra (making her third movie appearance), Rodan (his second) and the greatest adversary Godzilla ever faced, King Ghidorah, making his debut. Will Godzilla, up until now a malevolent force, battle Ghidorah and help save the earth?

The blend of fantasy and sci-fi brings alien possession and threats of world destruction. The film has some of the strongest performances of the franchise, with Akiko Wakabayashi as a possessed princess and Takashi Shimura (the lead in Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru) as a psychiatrist. Best of all, of course, is the monster mayhem, a tremendous spectacle on our Outdoor Cinema screen.

This screening will also have a video intro by Kaiju scholar and historian Steven Sloss. Sloss has been a lifelong fan of the genre and has spent years studying and presenting on Kaiju films, including a past screening of The Whale God. He has also written extensively on the genre, and is currently working on a book regarding the original 1954 Godzilla film that will be published in 2027 for for Bloomsbury Publishing and the BFI. This screening is an amazing opportunity to not only see an iconic film on the big screen with the Kaiju community, but learn a little something along the way!

  • As a film student, Matthew has found great interest in the behind-the-scenes and making of all different kinds of films. He has always taken a great interest in practical effects, and there is no better example of those than kaiju and tokusatsu films. Along with this, Matthew hopes to one day be able to work on different film sets and make his own shows and films, using his experience and love of kaiju as an inspiration.
