Many exciting announcements and gameplay showcases were made at the PlayStation state of play on June 2nd, including the heavily anticipated Wolverine, along with the reveal of a sequel to a horror game classic in the form of Until Dawn 2. However, we have finally received an update to the dinosaur survival game The Lost Wild, developed by Great Ape Games and published by Annapurna interactive, three years after its initial reveal in 2022. A brand new trailer featuring more gameplay has been released along with a Playstation.blog post made by game director Gary Napper.
The Lost Wild is described to be, “a game where you don’t fight dinosaurs. You survive around them. It is built on three things: observation, instinct, and restraint. Watching where a dinosaur looks before you move. Holding still when something taller than the building you’re hiding behind walks past. Knowing when not to run. In this post, I want to talk about the design philosophy behind it,” per Napper.

He goes on to elaborate that this world is one that frames dinosaurs as believable animals rather than monsters. Moreover, this philosophy should create an interesting experience for the player as they navigate a realistic dinosaur survival adventure that everyone has wanted to emualte since we laid our eyes on Jurassic Park. Napper went on to say, “Survial depends on observation, learning, and reaction. When encounters happen, players evade, hide, create distractions, and use the environment to escape.”
The game follows a protagonist named Saskia, who is wandering the island searching to discover what occurred on this island and why it was abandoned. “Storytelling in The Lost Wild is designed to be discovered rather than force-fed,” Napper continued, adding a layer of expliration and observation that will pique player interest as they attempt to understand just as much as Saskia wants to.
With Napper at the helm, and his exprience working on the critically acclaimed Alien: Isolation, there is plenty of promise for this new entry into the wide genre of dinosaur video games. The graphics, from what we see in the trailers, look stunning, and the design philosophy is sound. The Lost Wild will release on PS5 and PC in 2027.
