Kaiju Klash Brings Liverpool First Ever Kaiju Film Festival

You! Yes, you! Have you ever been interested in watching not just one, but FOUR different Kaiju films all in one day? Well, you’re just in luck! For Kaiju fans located in the United Kingdom, especially near Liverpool, this opportunity presents itself in the Kaiju Clash Film Festival on June 13th.

Empire Sector Events is bringing Liverpool its very first Kaiju film festival. While many Kaiju fans are certainly familiar with most, if not all, of the movies screened at this festival, Kaiju Klash is unique in allowing the UK community to see these movies on the big screen for the first time. This festival intends to celebrate all of the giant, campy, and sometimes strange magic of the Kaiju genre. The film festival will be taking place in the Plaza Community Cinema, based in Waterloo, Liverpool. This space is a community theater that is run mainly by volunteer workers wanting to bring education and community to film, so be sure to come and support!

What better way to start off the festival than with the Queen of the Monsters herself, Mothra! The first film being screened will be 1961’s Mothra. Being the debut appearance of the fan-favorite companion of Godzilla, the film is a great place to start for any new Kaiju fan, and a wonderful piece of Kaiju film history for anyone to admire.

The second film to be screened will be 1968’s Destroy All Monsters. Regarded as one of the most important (and most campy) Kaiju films of the Showa era, this film has everything a Kaiju fan wants to see in a film. With an amazing (and ambitious) cast of different Kaiju—from famous foes like Rodan and King Ghidorah to the more obscure like Manda and Gorosaurus—this film is a must-see on the silver screen!

Bringing it to the modern era, the third film being shown will be 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. A block-buster success, this film rebooted the character of King Kong in a fresh and bold new way. Not only that, but this film was Kong’s first appearance in Legendary’s Monsterverse, allowing the ape to come face to face with Godzilla in later movies. This film acts as a great origin story to everyone’s favorite giant primate.

The fourth and final film to be screened at Kaiju Klash will be the fan-favorite from the Heisei era Godzilla vs. Biollante from 1989. This film remains one of the more unique films in the Godzilla franchise. It is a darker, more introspective film than one might expect from a giant monster movie, which is precisely why it is such a hit! This film provides Godzilla with one of his most unique and menacing foes in the form of Biollante, a mutated plant creature. This film stands as a classic for a reason!

All of the films will have video introductions by renowned Kaiju scholar Steven Sloss. Sloss has been years dedicated to researching and presenting the importance of Kaiju films over the decades. He has written much text regarding Kaiju, and is currently working on a book about the original Godzilla film from 1954.

Attendees of the film also have two different viewing options: For those wanting to see all four movies during the day, tickets will be £15, while going for each individual film costs £5. This festival acts as a great way for fans in and around Liverpool to see these iconic films on-screen and celebrate Kaiju culture with the city’s first Kaiju film festival!

  • As a film student, Matthew has found great interest in the behind-the-scenes and making of all different kinds of films. He has always taken a great interest in practical effects, and there is no better example of those than kaiju and tokusatsu films. Along with this, Matthew hopes to one day be able to work on different film sets and make his own shows and films, using his experience and love of kaiju as an inspiration.
