IDW Publishing Reveals First Look at ‘The Horror of Godzilla’ Issue #2

For fans looking for more story surrounding the mysterious origins of IDW Publishing’s Kai-Sei Godzilla, look no further than the new comic miniseries The Horror of Godzilla. The folks over at IDW have given fans the first look at the second issue of this series on Godzilla.com, as well as three cover variants. The series, written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan (Marvel Zombies, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone), as well as art made by Tristan Jones, follows the origins of the King of the Monsters within the bounds of the Kai-Sei Universe.

The story follows two scientists blamed with the creation of the creature. Here, they must cope with the mistakes that they have made, and the destruction they have caused. All the while, Godzilla is still haunting their lives and destroying the city that
they worked so hard to protect. The second issue follows these characters on the grounds that Godzilla is attacking. It is a dark, violent story that sets the tone for the rest of the Kai-Sei Universe.

The Horror of Godzilla is, through and through, a passion project for this entire team,” Parker said to Godzilla.com. “As writers, Griffin and I are getting to build on some of the most iconic concepts in storytelling, imagining a new beginning for a universe where monsters reign supreme. Then we have the unbelievable pleasure of seeing Tristan Jones bring it all to life like no one else could, with a cinematic sense of scale that looks like the future of comics. While this book is chock-full of easter eggs and mysteries that set up countless other stories in Godzilla’s Kai-Sei Universe, it’s also a complete standalone, a pulse-pounding horror tale where the killer is a walking mountain. Give it a read and witness the day everything changed.”

Along with this news, IDW Publishing has released three different variant covers for this issue. The first cover shows a giant, dominating Godzilla in the background. Just his head is shown with glowing white eyes. In front of him is soldiers falling out of a
helicopter. This variant is in color, while the second variant is a black and white version, reminiscent of the original 1954 Godzilla. The third variant cover, drawn by Jake Smith, pays homage to the 1989 film Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. The cover is titled Godzilla Takes Tokyo with the tagline on top saying “Tokyo has a new problem.”

The first issue of The Horror of Godzilla will be releasing on July 29, 2026, while the second issue will be releasing on September 16, 2026. Preorders for the first issue end on Monday, June 15, so make sure to stop by your local comic shop to secure a physical copy!

  • As a film student, Matthew has found great interest in the behind-the-scenes and making of all different kinds of films. He has always taken a great interest in practical effects, and there is no better example of those than kaiju and tokusatsu films. Along with this, Matthew hopes to one day be able to work on different film sets and make his own shows and films, using his experience and love of kaiju as an inspiration.
