Just when you thought Godzilla has crossed over with everyone and everything, IDW comes right back out and surprises you! Godzilla is traveling to The Land of Oz this Fall, and the King of the Monsters is sure to bring lots of mayhem along the way. But that’s not everything, as Comicbook.com exclusively revealed all of the major heavy-hitters from IDW’s Godzilla line that readers can expect in September and October. From Godzilla crashing everybody’s festivities celebrating the victory of the Knicks to some seriously cool variant covers by beloved community artists like Bob Eggleton & Jesse Hernandez, there’s something here for comic readers & kaiju enthusiasts of all kinds.
Godzilla vs. New York City
The next installment in the concurrent series of one-shot comics celebrating America’s greatest cities is the unsurprising addition of the Big Apple. This one was to be expected, although its timing of being long after Godzilla has stopped in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Kansas City, Portland, Texas, and San Diego (in that order!) was very surprising. Regardless, the King of the Monsters is no stranger to New York City, having destroyed it in 1968’s Destroy All Monsters, 1998’s Godzilla by TriStar Pictures, and of course, the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero.
IDW’s official solicitation states:
“Hey, I’m smashin’ here! The city that never sleeps is in for a rude awakening as Godzilla makes its way from one coast to another to take a bite of the Big Apple. New York City’s next smash hit is going to be on Broadway, off Broadway, and actually all around Broadway—and no amount of fast walking or turnstile hopping will help you escape this time! A youse you of top NYC comic talent assembles to bring Godzilla to the city that created comics. If Godzilla can wreck it here, Godzilla can wreck it anywhere!”
Don’t you love that Frank Sinatra reference? We certainly do. Check out two featured covers by Nathan Fox and Dean Haspiel!
Godzilla’s Third Kai-Sei Arc Begins!
Godzilla Issue #13 was also previewed! The continuing main saga behind the Kai-Sei era by writer Tim Seeley and artist Hendry Prasetya is entering its next major arc. For those who may be intimidated by being so many issues deep (and possibly behind!), don’t worry, because according to Comicbook, this new issue is also a brand new new jumping on point for readers. So if you’ve been watching from afar and want to get more into the Godzilla comics and IDW’s Kai-Sei push at large, get ready for this new issue that will debut in comic stores beginning October 7th! There’s also a bunch of epic variant covers from talents such as Bob Eggleton, Ito, Jesse Hernandez, and J Gonzo!
IDW gives us a reminder of where the story has gone thus far:
Godzilla is living inside the body of a teenage boy, G-Force operative Jacen Braid. Once, these two were mortal enemies…but now, they’re beginning to see eye to eye. Piece by piece, Jacen us beginning to understand his origin—and the horrible role the United States government played in it. It’s beginning to look like Jacen and Godzilla vs. America. Follow along with Nuki, Rumi, Incense, and Riviera as they desperately try to stop the monster they’ve created.

Monsterpiece Theatre Brings Us to Oz
In the literary mash-ups from creator Tom Scioli and friends, the King of the Monsters’ story prowess has been exemplified by pitting the creature in some of the most unexpected of places. From tragic romances like Romeo & Juliet to the wild, whimsical, and charming world of Robin Hood, there’s nowhere on Earth that this creature has not been to… that’s why in this next Monsterpiece Theatre Presents installment, Godzilla’s heading to the Land of Oz! The literary mashup comes from the minds of writer Mike Costa and artist Ryan Browne, with the final installment of Tom Scioli’s Robin Hood vs. Godzilla backup story being featured within as well.
I know many of you kaiju fans out there would have preferred this to be called The Lizard of Oz, but let us remind you that Godzilla is a walking natural disaster, and no mere lizard. That being said, that title is pretty catchy. What does Godzilla want to see the Wizard for? Why is our favorite kaiju in Emerald City? You’ll have to find out when The Kaiju of Oz hits comic shops on October 7th, the same day as the thirteenth issue of Godzilla.
Welcome to the Wonderful Land of Oz—where houses fall from the sky, scarecrows and tin men come to life, witches rule from specific compass directions, and…Godzilla reigns supreme?! That’s right. Godzilla is finally coming to Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and once it’s here, every land will be Munchkinland. Maybe the Cowardly Lion was on to something. Oh, and even better: the issue features the final part of Tom Scioli’s “Godzilla vs. Robin Hood”!
As you can see, there are some pretty major titles hitting comic stands this Fall, each varying in tone, style, and Godzilla’s overall portrayal. The fun doesn’t have to wait until September, though, as Godzilla vs. San Diego, Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla, and The Horror of Godzilla are all set to debut next month, with the San Diego comic debuting the same day as San Diego Comic-Con’s preview night! If you’re looking for one of those titles to pick up, check out our advance review of The Horror of Godzilla, in which we call it a “bloodcurdling ode to Godzilla’s roots as a horror icon.” Seriously, folks – it’s that good!
Stay tuned for more updates on IDW’s Godzilla comics on Kaiju United.
