The official Toho Godzilla Japan account on X, alongside cinematoday.jp, has officially announced the upcoming Godzilla Day short film titled Fest Godzilla II: Tokyo Vanishes. The film will debut as part of the annual Godzilla Fest, held on November 3rd in Japan.
This will continue the tradition in which these shorts utilize practical tokusatsu techniques, featuring suitmation and miniature effects.
A major development for this new short promises the creation of a brand-new, practical Burning Millennium Godzilla suit. As in the previous short film, the design was achieved through a combination of patches and CGI enhancement on the already existing MireGoji suit. This time, the production teams aim to construct a new suit.
For this, a crowdfunding campaign has been listed and will officially launch on June 30th. According to the campaign description (Roughly Translated via Google Translate):
“The production of ‘Fest Godzilla II: Tokyo Disappearance,’ a brand new special effects series that is a staple of Godzilla Fest, has been decided! A crowdfunding campaign to create the “Burning Millennium Godzilla” suit that will appear in this film, together with fans, will soon begin. Your support will make Godzilla’s chest burn red and become a light that illuminates the future of special effects—we look forward to your support!
Comment from director Kazuhiro Nakagawa (Roughly Translated via Google Translate):
“The previous film ended with the appearance of Burning Millennium Godzilla (BMG). I will never forget the feeling of “Is that really the end?!” that spread through the venue at that time. So, next up, in Fest Godzilla II: Tokyo Disappearance, we have no choice but to let BMG rampage to its heart’s content. Therefore, we will be creating a new BMG suit!! We ask for your support in this challenge.”
Renowned special effects artist and suit maker Shinichi Wakasa also shared his thoughts on X (Roughly Translated via Google Translate):
“An incredibly daunting task lies ahead. Yet, regarding this as my mission, I intend to see it through to completion. I would be deeply grateful for your cooperation.
As of now, Cinema Today reports that further details regarding the location and stage programming for this year’s Godzilla Fest will be revealed at a later date.
Notably, this will coincide with the release of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero, happening on the same day! A very exciting and busy day for Godzilla and fans!
